- Kapitel 15 -

The servants of God praise him who has delivered them from idolatry; condemning both the makers and the worshippers of idols.

But you, our God, are gracious and true, patient, and in mercy ordering all things.(a)
2
And, indeed, if we sin, we are yours, knowing your greatness; and, if we do not sin, we know that we are counted with you.
3
For to have known you is perfect justice, and to know justice and your virtue is the root of immortality.
4
For the skillful planning of evil men has not led us into error, nor the shadow of a picture, a fruitless labor, an image having been sculpted through the use of diverse colors,

the sight of which gives desire to the foolish, and he loves the likeness of a lifeless image without a soul.

Deserving are the lovers of evil, those who hope in such things, and those who make them, and those who love them, and those who promote them.(b)

But even the potter, pressing laboriously, molds the soft earth into vessels, each one for our use. And from the same clay he molds vessels, those which are for clean use, and similarly, those which are for the opposite. But, as to what is the use of a vessel, the potter is the judge.

And with effort he molds an empty god of the same clay, he who a little before had been made from the earth, and, after brief time, he himself returns from whence he came, to be claimed by he who holds the debt of his soul.

Yet his concern is, not what his work will be, nor that his life is short, but that he is being contested by those who work with gold and silver, yet he also does the same to those who work with copper, and he glories that he makes worthless things.(c)

For his heart is ashes, and his hope is worthless dirt, and his life is more common than clay,

because he ignores the One who molded him, and who instilled in him a working soul, and who breathed into him a living spirit.(d)

Yet they even considered our life to be a plaything, and the usefulness of life to be the accumulation of wealth, and that we must be acquiring things in every possible way, even from evil.
13
For, above all else, he knows himself to be lacking, who, from fragile material of the earth forms vessels and graven images.

For all the foolish and unhappy, in charge of the way of the arrogant soul, are enemies of your people and rule over them,(e)

because they have esteemed all the idols of the nations as gods, which neither have the use of eyes to see, nor noses to draw breath, nor ears to hear, nor the fingers of hands to grasp, and even their feet are slow to walk.

For man made them, and he who borrowed his own breath, formed them. For no man will be able to form God in the likeness of himself.(f)

For, being mortal, he forms a dead thing with his unjust hands. Yet, he is better than those things that he worships, because he indeed has lived, though he is mortal, but they never have.
18
Moreover, they worship the most miserable animals, for, to make a foolish comparison, these others are worse.(g)

But not even from their appearance can anyone discern anything good in these animals. Yet they have fled from the praise of God, and from his blessing.

(d)15:11 Here is an example of the ancient view of the human being: body, spirit, soul. However, this does not mean that the human person is made of three parts. The word spiritum means life or breath or spirit. So spiritum vitalem can mean breath of life. The idea of spirit, in this ancient view of the human person, is more or less equivalent to being alive or to the breath of life. It is not a second soul, nor is it a second soul-like part of the human person. When a human being dies, the body is buried, the soul goes to the afterlife, and the spirit (i.e. the breath of life) is has ended because the body is no longer alive.(Conte)
(e)15:14 The phrase “supra modum animæ superbi” is an interesting expression.(Conte)
(f)15:16 Should Deum be capitalized in this verse? Since man can form idols or false gods in his own image, this text is saying that man cannot form the one true God in his own image. Therefore, it should be capitalized.(Conte)
(g)15:18 The expression “insensata comparata” means “having been foolishly compared,” in other words, it is foolish to compare these things, but within such a foolish comparison, the one is even worse than the other.(Conte)

For even if we sin, we are yours, knowing your dominion; but we will not sin, knowing that we have been accounted yours.

For to be acquainted with you is(a) perfect righteousness, and to know your dominion is the root of immortality.
4
For we weren’t led astray by any evil plan of men’s, nor yet by painters’ fruitless labor, a form stained with varied colors,
5
the sight of which leads fools into(b) lust. Their desire is for the breathless form of a dead image.
6
Lovers of evil things, and worthy of such hopes, are those who make, desire, and worship them.
7
For a potter, kneading soft earth, laboriously molds each article for our service. He fashions out of the same clay both the vessels that minister to clean uses, and those of a contrary sort, all in like manner. What shall be the use of each article of either sort, the potter is the judge.

Also, laboring to an evil end, he molds a vain god out of the same clay, he who, having but a little before been made of earth, after a short space goes his way to the earth out of which he was taken, when he is required to render back the(c) soul which was lent him.

However he has anxious care, not because his powers must fail, nor because his span of life is short; But he compares himself with goldsmiths and silversmiths, and he imitates molders in(d) brass, and considers it great that he molds counterfeit gods.

His heart is ashes. His hope is of less value than earth. His life is of less honor than clay,

because he was ignorant of him who molded him, and of him that inspired into him(e) an active(f) soul, and breathed into him a vital spirit.

But(g) he accounted our life to be a game, and our(h) lifetime a festival for profit; for, he says, one must get gain however one can, even if it is by evil.
13
For this man, beyond all others, knows that he sins, out of earthy matter making brittle vessels and engraved images.
14
But most foolish and more miserable than a baby, are the enemies of your people, who oppressed them;
15
because they even considered all the idols of the nations to be gods, which have neither the use of eyes for seeing, nor nostrils for drawing breath, nor ears to hear, nor fingers for handling, and their feet are helpless for walking.
16
For a man made them, and one whose own spirit is borrowed molded them; for no one has power as a man to mold a god like himself.
17
But, being mortal, he makes a dead thing by the work of lawless hands; for he is better than the objects of his worship, since he indeed had life, but they never did.
18
Yes, and they worship the creatures that are most hateful, for, being compared as to lack of sense, these are worse than all others;
19
Neither, as seen beside other creatures, are they beautiful, so that one should desire them, but they have escaped both the praise of God and his blessing.
