- Kapitel 13 -

The source of great wealth

1
A wise son is the doctrine of his father. But he who ridicules does not listen when he is reproved.
2
From the fruit of his own mouth, a man shall be satisfied with good things. But the soul of betrayers is iniquity.

Whoever guards his mouth guards his soul. But whoever gives no consideration to his speech shall experience misfortunes.
4
The lazy one is willing and then not willing. But the soul of he who labors shall be made fat.
5
The just shall detest a lying word. But the impious confound and will be confounded.

Justice guards the way of the innocent. But impiety undermines the sinner.
7
One is like the rich, though he has nothing. And another is like the poor, though he has many riches.

The redemption of a man’s life is his riches. But he who is poor cannot tolerate correction.
9
The light of the just enriches. But the lamp of the impious will be extinguished.
10
Among the arrogant, there are always conflicts. But those who do everything with counsel are ruled by wisdom.

Substance obtained in haste will be diminished. But what is collected by hand, little by little, shall be multiplied.

Source of hope

Hope, when it is delayed, afflicts the soul. The arrival of the desired is a tree of life.

Whoever denounces something obligates himself for the future. But whoever fears a lesson shall turn away in peace. Deceitful souls wander into sins. The just are merciful and compassionate.(a)

The law of the wise is a fountain of life, so that he may turn aside from the ruin of death.

Good doctrine bestows grace. In the way of the contemptuous, there is a chasm.

The discerning do everything with counsel. But whoever is senseless discloses his stupidity.

The messenger of the impious will fall into evil. But a faithful ambassador shall prosper.

Destitution and disgrace are for those who abandon discipline. But whoever agrees with a reproof shall be glorified.

The desired, when perfected, shall delight the soul. The foolish detest those who flee from evils.(b)

Whoever keeps step with the wise shall be wise. A friend of the foolish will become like them.
21
Evil pursues sinners. And good things shall be distributed to the just.
22
The good leave behind heirs: children and grandchildren. And the substance of the sinner is preserved for the just.(c)

Much nourishment is in the fallow land of the fathers. But for others, it is gathered without judgment.
24
He who spares the rod hates his son. But he who loves him urgently instructs him.
25
The just eats and fills his soul. But the belly of the impious is never satisfied.

(c)13:22 The subject of the sentence is ‘bonus’ and it lacks a separate word for ‘man’ (vir). The word ‘filios’ is masculine and refers to sons, but the word ‘nepotes’ is not masculine and refers to grandchildren. Since the word ‘vir’ is lacking and the word ‘nepotes’ is not specific to male descendents, the word filios is translated as children. An alternate translation is equally viable: ‘The good man leaves behind heirs: sons and grandsons.’(Conte)

Von der Frucht seines Mundes sättigt sich der Mensch an Gutem, die Seele der Frevler aber ist ungerecht.

Wer seinen Mund hütet, bewahrt sein Leben; wer aber unbedachtsam im Reden ist, dem ergeht es übel.

Der Faule will und will doch nicht, aber die Seele der Arbeitsamen wird reichlich gesättigt.

Der Gerechte verabscheut lügenhafte Reden, doch der Gottlose macht andere zuschanden und wird selbst zuschanden.

Die Gerechtigkeit behütet den Weg des Unschuldigen, aber die Gottlosigkeit bringt den Sünder zum Falle.

Mancher scheint reich und hat doch nichts, ein anderer scheint arm und hat doch großen Reichtum.

Mancher kauft mit seinem Reichtum sein Leben los; wer aber arm ist, hat keine Drohung zu erleiden.

Das Licht der Gerechten erfreut, aber die Leuchte der Gottlosen erlischt.

Unter den Hoffärtigen ist immer Hader; die sich aber raten lassen, werden von der Weisheit geleitet.

In Eile zusammengeraffter Reichtum nimmt ab, der aber nach und nach mit Fleiß erworbene mehrt sich.

Quelle der Hoffnung

Hoffnung, die hingehalten wird, macht der Seele Pein, ein Baum des Lebens ist erfüllter Wunsch.

Wer eine Sache schmäht, bindet sich für die Zukunft; wer aber das Gebot fürchtet, wird im Frieden wandeln. Ränkevolle Seelen irren in Sünden umher, Gerechte aber sind barmherzig und haben Mitleid.

Die Unterweisung des Weisen ist eine Quelle des Lebens, um dem Verderben des Todes zu entgehen.

Gute Lehre verschafft Gunst, der Weg der Verächter führt in den Abgrund.

Ein kluger Mann tut alles mit Überlegung; wer aber ein Tor ist, gibt seine Torheit kund.

Der Bote des Gottlosen fällt ins Unglück, aber ein treuer Bote bringt Heilung.

Armut und Schmach treffen den, der sich der Zucht entzieht; wer aber Zurechtweisung annimmt, kommt zu Ehren.

Wird ein Begehren erfüllt, so freut sich die Seele; Toren verabscheuen jene, welche das Böse fliehen.

Wer mit Weisen umgeht, wird weise; der Freund der Toren wird ihnen gleich.

Die Sünder verfolgt Unglück, aber den Gerechten wird mit Gutem vergolten.

Der Gute hinterlässt als Erben seine Söhne und Enkel, und für den Gerechten wird die Habe des Sünders aufbewahrt.

Speise in Fülle bringt das neue Ackerland der Väter, aber für andere wird sie ohne Recht gesammelt.

Wer die Rute spart, haßt seinen Sohn; wer ihn aber lieb hat, hält ihn beständig in der Zucht.
25
Der Gerechte isst, bis er satt ist; der Gottlosen Bauch aber kennt kein Genügen.
