The Prophet Daniel

- Kapitel 8 -

In the third year of the reign of King Belshazzar, I, Daniel, had a vision appear to me, after the one that appeared to me at first.

I saw in the vision, as I was looking, that I was in the fortified city of Susa in the province of Elam. I saw in the vision that I was beside the Ulai Canal.

I looked up and saw before me a ram with two horns, standing beside the canal. One horn was longer than the other, but the longer one grew more slowly than the shorter and was passed up in length by it.

I saw the ram charging west, then north, and then south; no other animal could stand before him. None of them was able to rescue anyone out of his hand. He did whatever he wanted, and he became great.

As I was thinking about this, I saw a male goat come from the west, who went across the surface of the whole earth, running fast, not seeming to touch the ground. The goat had a large horn between his eyes.

He came to the ram who had two horns-I had seen the ram standing on the bank of the canal-and the goat ran toward the ram in a powerful rage.

I saw the goat come close to the ram. He was very angry at the ram, and he hit the ram and broke off its two horns. The ram was powerless to stand before him. The goat knocked him down to the ground and trampled on him. There was no one who could rescue the ram from his power.

Then the goat became very large. But when he became strong, the large horn was broken, and in its place four other large horns grew up that pointed toward the four winds of the heavens.

Out of one of them grew another horn, little at first, but which became very large in the south, in the east, and in the land of beauty.

It became so large as to engage in war with the army of heaven. Some of that army and some of the stars were thrown down to the earth, and it trampled on them.

It made itself to be as great as the commander of the army. It took away from him the regular burnt offering, and the place of his sanctuary was polluted.

Because of rebellion, the army will be given over to the goat’s horn, and the burnt offering will be stopped. The horn will throw truth down to the ground, and it will succeed in what it does.

Then I heard a holy one speaking and another holy one answering him, “How long will these things last, this vision about the burnt offering, the sin that brings destruction, the handing over of the sanctuary, and heaven’s army being trampled on?”

He said to me, “It will last for 2,300 evenings and mornings. After that the sanctuary will be put right.”

Gabriel Interprets Daniel’s Vision

When I, Daniel, had seen the vision, I tried to understand it. Then there stood before me one who looked like a man.

I heard a man’s voice calling between the banks of the Ulai Canal. He said, “Gabriel, help this man understand the vision.”

So he came near where I stood. When he came, I was frightened and prostrated myself on the ground. He said to me, “Understand, son of man, that the vision is for the time of the end.”

When he spoke to me, I fell into a deep sleep with my face to the ground. Then he touched me and made me stand up.

He said, “See, I will show you what will happen later in the time of wrath, because the vision concerns the appointed time for the end.

As for the ram you saw, the one that had two horns-they are the kings of Media and Persia.

The male goat is the king of Greece. The large horn between his eyes is the first king.

As for the horn that was broken, in the place of which four others arose-four kingdoms will arise from his nation, but not with his great power.

At the latter time of those kingdoms, when the transgressors shall have reached their limit, a grim-faced king, one who is very intelligent, will arise.

His power will be great-but not by his own power. He will be amazing in what he destroys; he will act and succeed. He will destroy powerful people, people among the holy ones.

By his craftiness he will make deceit prosper under his hand. He will become great in his own mind. He will unexpectedly destroy many people. He will even rise up against the King of kings, and he will be broken, but not by any human hand.

The vision about the evenings and mornings that has been told is true. But seal up the vision, for it refers to many days in the future.”

Then I, Daniel, was overcome and lay weak for several days. Then I got up, and went about the king’s business. But I was appalled by the vision, and there was no one who understood it.

Vision von einem Widder und einem Ziegenbock

Im dritten Jahre der Herrschaft des Königs Baltassar hatte ich ein Gesicht. Ich, Daniel, schaute nach dem, was ich früher gesehen

in meinem Gesichte, während ich in der Burg von Susa war, welche in er Landschaft Älam liegt, und ich schaute im Gesichte, dass ich mich am Tore Ulai befand.

Als ich nun meine Augen erhob, schaute ich: siehe, da stand ein Widder vor dem Sumpfe, der zwei hohe Hörner hatte, von denen das eine höher war als das andere und noch emporwuchs. Darnach

sah ich den Widder mit den Hörnern nach Westen, Norden und Süden stoßen und kein einziges Tier vermochte, ihm standzuhalten noch sich aus seiner Gewalt zu retten; und er tat, was er wollte, und ward überaus mächtig.

Und ich gab acht: siehe, da kam ein Ziegenbock von Westen her über den ganzen Erdboden, ohne die Erde zu berühren; dieser Bock hatte ein Horn, das zwischen seinen Augen weit hervortrat.

Er kam bis zu dem gehörnten Widder, den ich vor dem Tore stehen sah, und lief wider ihn mit aller Gewalt seiner Stärke an.

Als er nun in die Nähe des Widders kam, warf er sich voll Wut auf diesen und stieß nach dem Widder und zerbrach ihm die Hörner; und da der Widder ihm nicht standzuhalten vermochte, warf er ihn zu Boden und trat ihn mit Füßen, ohne dass jemand den Widder aus seiner Gewalt befreien konnte.

Und der Ziegenbock ward überaus mächtig; doch nachdem er stark geworden, zerbrach das große Horn und es wuchsen unter demselben vier Hörner hervor nach den vier Winden des Himmels hin.

Von einem derselben ging ein kleines Horn hervor, dieses ward sehr groß nach Süden, nach Osten und gegen die Feste.

Auch erhob es sich bis zur Feste des Himmels und stürzte etliche von der Feste und von den Sternen herab und trat sie mit Füßen.

Selbst bis zu dem Fürsten der Feste erhob er sich und nahm ihm das tägliche Opfer und zerstörte die Stätte seines Heiligtums.

Um der Sünde willen ward ihm Macht gegeben wider das tägliche Opfer, die Wahrheit wird zu Boden geworfen und es gelingt ihm, was er tut.

Da hörte ich einen von den Heiligen zu einem anderen, der mit ihm redete, den ich aber nicht kannte, sagen: Bis wie lange währt dies Gesicht, nämlich von dem beständigen Opfer und dem Frevel der Verwüstung, die vor sich geht, und wird das Heiligtum und die Feste zertreten werden?

Er antwortete ihm: Bis zweitausend dreihundert Tage im Wechsel von Abend und Morgen vergehen, alsdann wird das Heiligtum gereinigt werden.

Gabriel deutet die Vision

Es begab sich aber, als ich, Daniel, dies Gesicht sah und dessen Verständnis begehrte, siehe, da stand vor mir jemand, der das Aussehen eines Mannes hatte.

Und ich hörte innerhalb des Ulai eines Menschen Stimme, die rief und sprach: Gabriel! Erkläre diesem da das Gesicht!

Da kam dieser und trat nahe an den Ort, wo ich stand; und als er herantrat, fiel ich erschrocken auf mein Angesicht, er aber sprach zu mir: Merke auf, Menschensohn! denn in der Endzeit wird das Gesicht erfüllt.

Als er so zu mir redete, fiel ich auf mein Angesicht zur Erde, er aber berührte mich und richtete mich auf, dass ich stand.

Alsdann sprach er zu mir: Ich will dir kundtun, was geschehen wird zur Endzeit des Fluches, denn die Zeit hat ihr Ende.

Der Widder, den du gesehen, der zwei Hörner hatte, bedeutet den König von Medien und Persien.

Der Ziegenbock ist der König von Griechenland und das große Horn zwischen seinen Augen ist der erste König.

Dass es aber zerbrach und an seiner Statt vier erstanden, bedeutet, dass vier Könige aus seinem Volke erstehen werden, aber ohne seine Macht.

Und wenn am Ende ihrer Herrschaft die Ungerechtigkeit überhandgenommen, wird ein König aufstehen, frechen Angesichts und ränkekundig.

Dessen Macht wird groß werden, aber nicht durch seine Kraft; er wird unermessliches Verderben anrichten und Gelingen haben in seinem Tun, er wird die Gewaltigen und das Volk der Heiligen töten

nach seinem Wohlgefallen und seine Arglist wird Erfolg haben, sein Herz wird sich erheben und im Glücksrausche wird er sehr viele ums Leben bringen; er wird sich wider den Herrn der Herren auflehnen, aber vernichtet werden ohne Zutun von Menschenhand.

Und das Gesicht von den Abenden und den Morgen, von dem gesprochen ward, ist wahrhaft; darum besiegle das Gesicht, denn nach vielen Tagen trifft es ein.

Und ich, Daniel, ward schwach und eine Reihe von Tagen hindurch krank. Als ich wieder aufgestanden und den Dienst des Königs besorgte, war ich voller Schrecken über das Gesicht; doch niemand war, der es auszulegen verstand.
