- Kapitel 11 -

Then Gilead begate Iphtah, and Iphtah the Gileadite was a valiant man, but the sonne of an harlot.

And Gileads wife bare him sonnes, and when the womans children were come to age, they thrust out Iphtah, and sayd vnto him, Thou shalt not inherite in our fathers house: for thou art the sonne of a strange woman.

Then Iphtah fledde from his brethren, and dwelt in the land of Tob: and there gathered idle fellowes to Iphtah, and went out with him.

And in processe of time the children of Ammon made warre with Israel.

And when the children of Ammon fought with Israel, the Elders of Gilead went to fet Iphtah out of the land of Tob.

And they saide vnto Iphtah, Come and be our captaine, that we may fight with the children of Ammon.

Iphtah then answered the Elders of Gilead, Did not ye hate me, and expell me out of my fathers house? how then come you vnto me now in time of your tribulation?

Then the Elders of Gilead saide vnto Iphtah, Therefore we turne againe to thee now, that thou mayest goe with vs, and fight against the children of Ammon, and bee our head ouer all the inhabitants of Gilead.

And Iphtah said vnto the Elders of Gilead, If ye bring me home againe to fight against the children of Ammon, if the Lord giue them before me, shall I be your head?

And the Elders of Gilead saide to Iphtah, The Lord be witnesse betweene vs, if we doe not according to thy wordes.

Then Iphtah went with the Elders of Gilead, and the people made him head and captaine ouer them: and Iphtah rehearsed all his wordes before the Lord in Mizpeh.

Then Iphtah sent messengers vnto the king of the children of Ammon, saying, What hast thou to doe with me, that thou art come against me, to fight in my lande?

And the King of the children of Ammon answered vnto the messengers of Iphtah, Because Israel tooke my lande, when they came vp from Egypt, from Arnon vnto Iabbok, and vnto Iorden: now therefore restore those lands quietly.

Yet Iphtah sent messengers againe vnto the King of the children of Ammon,

And said vnto him, Thus saith Iphtah, Israel tooke not the lande of Moab, nor the lande of the children of Ammon.

But when Israel came vp from Egypt, and walked through the wildernesse vnto the redde Sea, then they came to Kadesh.

And Israel sent messengers vnto the king of Edom, saying, Let me, I pray thee, goe thorowe thy lande: but the King of Edom woulde not consent: and also they sent vnto the King of Moab, but he would not: therefore Israel abode in Kadesh.

Then they went through the wildernesse, and compassed the lande of Edom, and the lande of Moab, and came by the Eastside of the lande of Moab, and pitched on the other side of Arnon, and came not within the coast of Moab: for Arnon was the border of Moab.

Also Israel sent messengers vnto Sihon, King of the Amorites, the King of Heshbon, and Israel said vnto him, Let vs passe, we pray thee, by thy lande vnto our place.

But Sihon consented not to Israel, that he shoulde goe through his coast: but Sihon gathered all his people together, and pitched in Iahaz, and fought with Israel.

And the Lord God of Israel gaue Sihon and all his folke into the handes of Israel, and they smote them: so Israel possessed all the lande of the Amorites, the inhabitants of that countrey:

And they possessed all the coast of the Amorites, from Arnon vnto Iabbok, and from the wildernesse euen vnto Iorden.

Nowe therefore the Lord God of Israel hath cast out the Amorites before his people Israel, and shouldest thou possesse it?

Wouldest not thou possesse that which Chemosh thy god giueth thee to possesse? So whomesoeuer the Lord our God driueth out before vs, them will we possesse.

And art thou nowe farre better then Balak the sonne of Zippor King of Moab? did he not striue with Israel and fight against them,

When Israel dwelt in Heshbon and in her townes, and in Aroer and in her townes, and in all the cities that are by the coastes of Arnon, three hundreth yeeres? why did ye not then recouer them in that space?

Wherefore, I haue not offended thee: but thou doest me wrong to warre against me. The Lord the Iudge be iudge this day betweene the children of Israel, and the children of Ammon.

Howbeit the King of the children of Ammon hearkened not vnto the wordes of Iphtah, which he had sent him.

Jephthah’s Tragic Vow

Then the Spirite of the Lord came vpon Iphtah, and he passed ouer to Gilead and to Manasseh, and came to Mizpeh in Gilead, and from Mizpeh in Gilead he went vnto the children of Ammon.

And Iphtah vowed a vowe vnto the Lord, and said, If thou shalt deliuer the children of Ammon into mine handes,

Then that thing that commeth out of the doores of mine house to meete me, when I come home in peace from the children of Ammon, shall be the Lordes, and I will offer it for a burnt offering.

And so Iphtah went vnto the children of Ammon to fight against them, and the Lord deliuered them into his handes.

And he smote them from Aroer euen till thou come to Minnith, twentie cities, and so foorth to Abel of the vineyardes, with an exceeding great slaughter. Thus the children of Ammon were humbled before the children of Israel.

Nowe when Iphtah came to Mizpeh vnto his house, beholde, his daughter came out to meete him with timbrels and daunces, which was his onely childe: he had none other sonne, nor daughter.

And when hee sawe her, hee rent his clothes, and saide, Alas my daughter, thou hast brought me lowe, and art of them that trouble me: for I haue opened my mouth vnto the Lord, and can not goe backe.

And she said vnto him, My father, if thou hast opened thy mouth vnto the Lord, doe with me as thou hast promised, seeing that the Lord hath auenged thee of thine enemies the children of Ammon.

Also she saide vnto her father, Doe thus much for me: suffer me two moneths, that I may goe to the mountaines, and bewaile my virginitie, I and my fellowes.

And he sayde, Goe: and he sent her away two moneths: so she went with her companions, and lamented her virginitie vpon the moutaines.

And after the ende of two moneths, she turned againe vnto her father, who did with her according to his vowe which he had vowed, and she had knowen no man. and it was a custome in Israel:

The daughters of Israel went yere by yere to lament the daughter of Iphtah the Gileadite, foure dayes in a yeere.

Jephthah

Zu jener Zeit lebte Jephte, der Galaadite, ein sehr starker und streitbarer Held, einer Buhlerin Sohn, welcher von Galaad gezeugt war.

Galaad aber hatte ein Weib, die ihm Söhne gebar, welche, groß geworden, Jephte hinausstießen und sprachen: Du kannst nicht im Hause unseres Vaters Erbe sein, denn du bist der Sohn einer andern Mutter.

Da floh Jephte vor ihnen und mied sie und ließ sich im Lande Tob nieder; und es sammelten sich zu ihm nichts besitzende und raubsüchtige Leute und folgten ihm als ihren Anführer.

In jener Zeit kämpften die Söhne Ammons wider Israel.

Und da jene ihnen heftig zusetzten, zogen die Ältesten von Galaad hin, um sich aus dem Lande Tob Jephte zu Hilfe zu holen;

und sie sprachen zu ihm: Komm, werde unser Fürst und kämpfe gegen die Söhne Ammons!

Er antwortete ihnen: Seid nicht ihr es, die mich gehaßt und aus dem Hause meines Vaters verjagt haben; und jetzt kommt ihr zu mir, durch die Not getrieben?

Da sprachen die Häupter von Galaad zu Jephte: Eben darum sind wir zu dir gekommen, dass du mit uns ziehest und gegen die Söhne Ammons kämpfest und Fürst über alle seiest, die in Galaad wohnen.

Jephte antwortete ihnen: Seid ihr wirklich zu mir gekommen, damit ich für euch wider die Söhne Ammons kämpfe, und werde ich, wenn der Herr sie in meine Hände gibt, dann euer Fürst sein?

Sie antworteten ihm: Der Herr, der dies hört, ist Mittler und Zeuge, dass wir tun werden, was wir versprechen.

Da zog Jephte mit den Vornehmen von Galaad hin, und das ganze Volk machte ihn zu seinem Fürsten. Und Jephte redete alle seine Worte vor dem Herrn zu Maspha.

Hierauf sandte er Boten an den König der Söhne Ammons und ließ ihm in seinem Namen sagen: Was hast du mit mir zu schaffen, dass du gegen mich herangezogen bist, mein Land zu verheeren?

Jener antwortete ihnen: Weil Israel mein Land vom Arnon bis an den Jabok und den Jordan weggenommen hat, als es aus Ägypten heraufzog; gib es mir jetzt also friedlich zurück.

Jephte aber sandte sie nochmals hin und befahl ihnen, dem Könige von Ammon zu sagen:

So spricht Jephte: Israel hat weder das Land Moab noch das Land der Söhne Ammons weggenommen,

sondern als es aus Ägypten heraufzog, wanderte es durch die Wüste bis an das Rote Meer, und nach Kades gekommen,

sandte es Boten an den König von Edom und ließ ihm sagen: Lass mich durch dein Land ziehen. Dieser aber wollte seine Bitte nicht erhören. Ebenso sandte Israel an den König von Moab; aber auch dieser weigerte sich, den Durchzug zu gestatten. Es blieb also in Kades.

und umging das Land Edom und das Land Moab seitwärts und kam in das östlich vom Lande Moab gelegene Gebiet und lagerte sich jenseits des Arnon; und wollte in das Gebiet Moabs nicht eindringen, denn der Arnon bildet die Grenze des Landes Moab.

Da sandte Israel Boten zu Sehon, dem Könige der Amorrhiter, der in Hesebon wohnte, und ließ ihm durch diese sagen: Lass mich durch dein Land ziehen bis an den Fluss.

Aber auch er verachtete die Worte Israels und ließ es nicht durch sein Gebiet ziehen, sondern sammelte unzählbares Kriegsvolk und zog ihm bis Jasa entgegen und stellte sich ihm in hartem Kampfe entgegen.

Und der Herr gab ihn mit seinem ganzen Heere in die Hand Israels, und Israel schlug ihn und nahm das ganze Land der Amorrhiter ein, die jene Gegend bewohnten,

und ihr ganzes Gebiet vom Arnon bis zum Jabok und von der Wüste bis zum Jordan.

Der Herr also, der Gott Israels, hat die Amorrhiter vertilgt, als sein Volk Israel mit ihnen kämpfte, und du willst jetzt ihr Land in Besitz nehmen?

Gehört dir nicht mit Recht das, was dein Gott Chamos besitzt? Was aber der Herr, unser Gott, als Sieger errungen hat, soll uns gehören.

Oder bist du etwas besser als Balak, der Sohn Sephors, der König von Moab; oder kannst du erweisen, dass er mit Israel gerechtet und gegen dasselbe gekämpft hat,

zur Zeit, wo es in Hesebon und dessen Dörfern, und in Aroer und dessen Dörfern, oder in allen Städten am Jordan schon dreihundert Jahre lang ansässig war? Warum habt ihr so lange Zeit diese Rückforderung nicht versucht?

Sonach vergehe ich mich nicht gegen dich, sondern du tust übel an mir, indem du mir ungerechten Krieg ankündest. Der Herr sei Richter am heutigen Tage und entscheide zwischen Israel und zwischen den Söhnen Ammons!

Aber der König der Söhne Ammons wollte auf die Worte Jephtes, die er ihm durch die Boten hatte sagen lassen, nicht hören.

Jephthahs Gelübde und Sieg

Da kam auf Jephte der Geist des Herrn, und er zog durch Galaad und Manasse, auch nach Maspha in Galaad, und zog von dort gegen die Söhne Ammons

und machte dem Herrn ein Gelübde und sprach: Wenn du die Söhne Ammons in meine Hand überlieferst,

so will ich den, der zuerst aus der Tür meines Hauses heraustritt und mir entgegenkommt, wenn ich in Frieden von den Söhnen Ammons zurückkehre, dem Herrn als Brandopfer darbringen, wer es auch sei.

Hierauf zog Jephte gegen die Söhne Ammons, um gegen sie zu kämpfen; und der Herr gab sie in seine Hand.

Er brachte ihnen von Aroer bis nach Mennith hin, zwanzig Städte, und bis nach Abel, das ringsum von Weinbergen umhegt ist, eine sehr schwere Niederlage bei; und so wurden die Söhne Ammons von den Söhnen Israels gedemütigt.

Jephthahs Tochter

Als nun Jephte wieder nach Maspha in sein Haus kam, kam ihm seine einzige Tochter mit Pauken und Tanz entgegen; denn er hatte keine anderen Kinder.

Als er sie sah, zerriss er seine Kleider und sprach: Ach, meine Tochter, du hast mich betrogen und wurdest selbst betrogen; denn ich habe meinen Mund aufgetan gegen den Herrn und ich kann nun nichts anderes tun!

Sie antworteten ihm: Mein Vater! hast du deinen Mund gegen den Herrn aufgetan, so tue mir, was du immer gelobt hast, nachdem dir Rache und Sieg über deine Feinde verliehen worden.

Und sie sprach zu ihrem Vater: Dies eine nur gewähre mir, um was ich bitte; Laß mich zwei Monate hindurch auf den Bergen herumwandeln und meine Jungfrauschaft mit meinen Gespielinnen beweinen.

Er antwortete ihr: gehe hin! Und er ließ sie auf zwei Monate ziehen. Da ging sie hin mit ihren Gefährtinnen und Gespielinnen und beweinte ihre Jungfrauschaft auf den Bergen.

Und als zwei Monate um waren, kehrte sie zu ihrem Vater zurück, und er tat an ihr, die um keinen Mann wusste, wie er gelobt hatte. Seitdem ward es Sitte und bleibende Gewohnheit in Israel,

dass die Töchter Israels jährlich zusammen kommen, und die Tochter Jephtes, des Galaaditers, vier Tage lang beklagen.
