- Kapitel 3 -

Then Ioshua rose very earely, and they remoued from Shittim, and came to Iorden, he, and all the children of Israel, and lodged there, before they went ouer.

And after three dayes the officers went throughout the hoste,

And commanded the people, saying, When ye see the Arke of the couenat of the Lord your God, and the Priestes of the Leuites bearing it, ye shall depart from your place, and goe after it.

Yet there shalbe a space betweene you and it, about two thousande cubites by measure: ye shall not come neere vnto it, that ye may knowe the way, by the which ye shall goe: for ye haue not gone this way in times past.

(Nowe Ioshua had saide vnto the people, Sanctifie your selues: for to morowe the Lord will doe wonders among you)

Also Ioshua spake vnto the Priestes, saying, Take vp the Arke of the couenant, and goe ouer before the people: so they tooke vp the Arke of the couenant, and went before the people.

Then the Lord saide vnto Ioshua, This day will I begin to magnifie thee in the sight of all Israel, which shall knowe, that as I was with Moses, so will I be with thee.

Thou shalt therefore command the Priests that beare the Arke of the Couenant, saying, When ye are come to the brinke of the waters of Iorden, ye shall stande still in Iorden.

Then Ioshua said vnto the children of Israel, Come hither, and heare the wordes of the Lord your God.

And Ioshua said, Hereby ye shall know that the liuing God is among you, and that he will certainely cast out before you the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Hiuites, and the Perizzites, and the Girgashites, and the Amorites, and the Iebusites.

Beholde, the Arke of the couenant of the Lord of all the worlde passeth before you into Iorden.

Nowe therefore take from among you twelue men out of the tribes of Israel, out of euery tribe a man.

And assoone as the soles of the feete of the Priestes (that beare the Arke of the Lord God the Lord of all the worlde) shall stay in the waters of Iorden, the waters of Iorden shall be cut off: for the waters that come from aboue, shall stande still vpon an heape.

Then when the people were departed from their tentes to goe ouer Iorden, the Priestes bearing the Arke of the Couenant, went before people.

And as they that bare the Arke came vnto Iorden, and the feete of the Priestes that bare the Arke were dipped in the brinke of the water, (for Iorden vseth to fill all his bankes all the time of haruest)

Then the waters that came downe from aboue, stayed and rose vpon an heape and departed farre from the citie of Adam, that was beside Zaretan: but the waters that came downe towarde the Sea of the wildernes, euen the salt Sea, failed, and were cut off: so the people went right ouer against Iericho.

But the Priestes that bare the Arke of the couenant of the Lord, stoode drie within Iorden readie prepared, and all the Israelites went ouer dry, vntill all the people were gone cleane ouer through Iorden.

Israel überquert den Jordan

Da erhob sich Josue des Nachts und brach auf; und sie zogen von Setim weiter, und kamen an den Jordan, er und alle Söhne Israels, und blieben daselbst drei Tage.

Nach Verlauf derselben gingen die Herolde mitten durch das Lager

und begannen zu rufen: Wenn ihr die Lade des Bundes des Herrn, eures Gottes, sehen werdet und die Priester vom Stamme Levi sie tragen, so machet auch ihr euch auf und folget ihnen, wenn sie vor euch herziehen;

doch bleibe zwischen euch und der Lade ein Raum von zweitausend Ellen, damit ihr sie aus der Ferne sehen und wissen könnet, welchen Weg ihr zu ziehen habt; denn ihr seid denselben noch nicht gezogen; und hütet euch, der Lade nahe zu kommen.

Dann sprach Josue zu dem Volke: Heiliget euch! denn morgen wird der Herr unter euch Wunder tun.

Und zu den Priestern sprach er: Hebet die Lade des Bundes auf und ziehet vor dem Volke her! Sie taten, was er befohlen, und nahmen dieselbe und zogen vor ihnen her.

Und der Herr sprach zu Josue: Heute werde ich anfangen, dich vor ganz Israel zu verherrlichen, damit sie wissen, dass, wie ich mit Moses war, ich ebenso mit dir bin.

Du aber befiehl den Priestern, welche die Lade des Bundes tragen, und sprich zu ihnen: Wenn ihr in einen Teil des Wassers des Jordans getreten seid, so bleibet dort stehen.

Und Josue sprach zu den Söhnen Israels: Tretet hierher und höret das Wort des Herrn, eures Gottes!

Und wieder sprach er: Daran möget ihr erkennen, dass der Herr, der lebendige Gott, in eurer Mitte ist und vor euch die Chananiter, Hethiter, Heviter, Phereziter, Gergesiter, Jebusiter und Ammorhiter vertilgen wird.

Sehet, die Lade des Bundes des Herrn der ganzen Erde wird durch den Jordan vor euch hergehen.

So bestimmet denn aus den Stämmen Israels zwölf Männer, je einen aus jedem Stamme.

Und wenn die Priester, welche die Lade des Herrn, des Gottes der ganzen Erde, tragen, mit ihren Füßen in das Wasser des Jordans getreten sind, so wird das Wasser, das unterhalb ist, abfließen und abnehmen; das Wasser aber, das von oben kommt, wird wie ein Wall stehen bleiben.

Da verließ das Volk seine Zelte, um über den Jordan zu gehen; und die Priester, welche die Lade des Bundes trugen, zogen vor demselben her.

Als diese nun in den Jordan hineingestiegen waren und ihre Füße in einen Teil des Wassers tauchten (der Jordan aber hatte zur Zeit der Ernte die Ufer seines Bettes ausgefüllt),

blieb das von oben herabfließende Wasser an einer Stelle stehen und erschien aufgetürmt wie ein Berg in weiter Entfernung von der Stadt, die Adom heißt, bis an den Ort Sarthan; das Wasser aber unterhalb floß in das Wüstenmeer (welches nun das tote Meer heißt), bis es sich ganz verlor.

Das Volk aber zog Jericho gegenüber hinein und die Priester, welche die Lade des Bundes des Herrn trugen, standen umgürtet, mitten im Jordan, auf trockenem Boden und alles Volk zog durch das trockene Flussbett hindurch.
