- Kapitel 48 -

Againe after this, one sayd to Ioseph, Loe, thy father is sicke: then hee tooke with him his two sonnes, Manasseh and Ephraim.

Also one told Iaakob, and said, Behold, thy sonne Ioseph is come to thee, and Israel tooke his strength vnto him and sate vpon the bed.

Then Iaakob sayde vnto Ioseph, God almightie appeared vnto me at Luz in the land of Canaan, and blessed me.

And he sayde vnto me, Behold, I wil make thee fruitefull, and will multiplie thee, and will make a great number of people of thee, and will giue this lande vnto thy seede after thee for an euerlasting possession.

And now thy two sonnes, Manasseh and Ephraim, which are borne vnto thee in the lande of Egypt, before I came to thee into Egypt, shall be mine, as Reuben and Simeon are mine.

But the linage, which thou hast begotten after them, shalbe thine: they shall be called after the names of their brethren in their inheritance.

Nowe when I came from Padan, Rahel died vpon mine hande in the lande of Canaan, by the way when there was but halfe a dayes iourney of grounde to come to Ephrath: and I buryed her there in the way to Ephrath: the same is Beth-lehem.

Then Israel beheld Iosephs sonnes and sayd, Whose are these?

And Ioseph sayd vnto his father, They are my sonnes, which God hath giuen mee here. Then he sayd, I pray thee, bring them to me, that I may blesse them:

(For the eyes of Israel were dimme for age, so that hee coulde not well see) Then he caused them to come to him, and he kissed them and embraced them.

And Israel sayde vnto Ioseph, I had not thought to haue seene thy face: yet lo, God hath shewed me also thy seede.

And Ioseph tooke them away from his knees, and did reuerence downe to the ground.

Then tooke Ioseph them both, Ephraim in his right hand towarde Israels left hand, and Manasseh in his left hand toward Israels right hand, so he brought them vnto him.

But Israel stretched out his right hand, and layde it on Ephraims head, which was the yonger, and his left hande vpon Manassehs head (directing his handes of purpose) for Manasseh was the elder.

Also he blessed Ioseph and sayde, The God, before whom my fathers Abraham and Izhak did walke, the God, which hath fed me al my life long vnto this day, blesse thee.

The Angel, which hath deliuered me from all euill, blesse the children, and let my name be named vpon them, and the name of my fathers Abraham and Izhak, that they may growe as fish into a multitude in the middes of the earth.

But when Ioseph sawe that his father layde his right hande vpon the head of Ephraim, it displeased him: and he stayed his fathers hand to remooue it from Ephraims head to Manassehs head.

And Ioseph sayde vnto his father, Not so, my father, for this is the eldest: put thy right hand vpon his head.

But his father refused, and sayd, I know well, my sonne, I know well: he shalbe also a people, and he shalbe great likewise: but his yonger brother shalbe greater then he, and his seede shall be full of nations.

So he blessed them that day, and sayde, In thee Israel shall blesse, and say, God make thee as Ephraim and as Manasseh. and he set Ephraim before Manasseh.

Then Israel said vnto Ioseph, Behold, I die, and God shall be with you, and bring you againe vnto the land of your fathers.

Moreouer, I haue giuen vnto thee one portion aboue thy brethren, which I gate out of the hand of the Amorite by my sworde and by my bowe.

Jakob segnet Josefs Söhne

Nach diesen Begebenheiten ward dem Joseph berichtet, dass sein Vater krank sei. Da nahm er seine zwei Söhne, Manasse und Ephraim, mit sich und machte sich auf den Weg.

Als man nun dem Greise sagte: Siehe, dein Sohn Joseph kommt zu dir, nahm er seine Kräfte zusammen und setzte sich im Bette auf.

Und da Joseph zu ihm eingetreten war, sprach er: Gott, der Allmächtige, erschien mir in Luza, im Lande Chanaan, und segnete mich,

und sprach: Ich will dich fruchtbar machen, und Familien von Völkern aus dir hervorgehen lassen, und dieses Land will ich dir und deinen Nachkommen nach dir zum Besitze geben auf immer.

Deine zwei Söhne nun, die dir im Lande Ägypten geboren wurden, ehe ich zu dir hierher gekommen bin, sollen meine Söhne sein; Ephraim und Manasses sollen mir gelten wie Ruben und Simeon.

Die übrigen Kinder aber, die du nach ihnen zeugen wirst, sollen dein sein und sollen den Namen ihrer Brüder in dem ihnen zu Teil gewordenen Besitze führen.

Denn als ich aus Mesopotamien kam, starb mir Rachel im Lande Chanaan noch auf dem Wege, es war Frühlingszeit; und ich zog nach Ephrata, und begrub sie am Wege nach Ephrata, welches mit anderem Namen Bethlehem heißt.

Da er nun dessen Söhne sah, sprach er zu ihm: Wer sind diese da?

Joseph antwortete: Es sind meine Söhne, die mir Gott allhier geschenkt hat. Da sprach Jakob: Führe sie zu mir her, dass ich sie segne.

Die Augen Israels waren nämlich dunkel von hohem Alter, und er konnte nicht deutlich sehen. Als nun Joseph sie näher zu ihm heran gebracht hatte, küsste und umarmte er sie

und sprach zu seinem Sohne: Ich ward deines Anblicks nicht beraubt, zudem hat Gott mich Nachkommen von dir sehen lassen.

Und nachdem Joseph sie von dem Schoße seines Vaters weggenommen hatte, neigte er sich bis zur Erde.

Und er stellte Ephraim zu seiner Rechten, das ist zur Linken Israels; Manasse aber zu seiner Linken, zur Rechten also des Vaters, und führte sie beide zu ihm heran.

Da streckte dieser seine rechte Hand aus, und legte sie auf das Haupt Ephraims, des jüngeren Bruders; die linke aber auf das Haupt Manasses, der älter war, kreuzweise.

Und Jakob segnete die Söhne Josephs und sprach: Gott, vor dessen Angesicht meine Väter Abraham und Isaak gewandelt sind, der Gott, der mein Hirt ist von Jugend auf, bis auf den heutigen Tag,

der Engel, der mich aus allem Übel errettet hat, segne diese Knaben: nach meinem Namen und dem Namen meiner Väter Abraham und Isaak mögen sie genannt werden und sich mehren zu großer Zahl auf Erden.

Da aber Joseph sah, dass sein Vater die rechte Hand auf Ephraims Haupt gelegt hatte, missfiel es ihm; und er ergriff die Hand seines Vaters und suchte sie von Ephraims Haupt weg, auf das Haupt Manasses hinüberzuziehen.

Und er sprach zu seinem Vater: Nicht also geziemt es sich, Vater; denn dieser da ist der Erstgeborene, lege deine Rechte auf sein Haupt.

Er aber weigerte sich und sprach: ich weiß es, mein Sohn! Ich weiß es; auch er wird zu Völkern werden, und wird sich reich mehren, aber sein jüngerer Bruder wird größer sein als er; und seine Nachkommenschaft wird sich mehren zu Völkern.

Und er segnete sie zu jener Zeit und sprach: In dir wird Israel gesegnet werden, und man wird sagen: Gott tue an dir wie an Ephraim und Manasse. Und er zog Ephraim dem Manasse vor.

Hierauf sprach er zu seinem Sohne Joseph: Siehe, ich sterbe, aber Gott wird mit euch sein und euch in das Land eurer Väter zurückführen.

Ich gebe dir einen Teil vor deinen Brüdern voraus, den ich den Amorrhitern mit meinem Schwerte und meinem Bogen abgenommen habe.
