- Kapitel 20 -

And Dauid fled from Naioth in Ramah, and came and sayd before Ionathan, What haue I done? what is mine iniquitie? and what sinne haue I committed before thy father, that he seeketh my life?

And he sayde vnto him, God forbid, thou shalt not die: beholde, my father will do nothing great nor small, but he will shewe it me: and why should my father hide this thing from me? he will not doe it.

And Dauid sware againe and sayd, Thy father knoweth that I haue found grace in thine eyes: therefore he thinketh, Ionathan shall not knowe it, lest he be sorie: but in deede, as the Lord liueth, and as thy soule liueth, there is but a step betweene me and death.

Then said Ionathan vnto Dauid, Whatsoeuer thy soule requireth, that I wil do vnto thee.

And Dauid said vnto Ionathan, Behold, to morowe is the first day of the moneth, and I shoulde sit with the King at meate: but let me goe, that I may hide my selfe in the fieldes vnto the third day at euen.

If thy father make mention of me, then say, Dauid asked leaue of me, that he might goe to Beth-lehem to his owne citie: for there is a yeerely sacrifice for all that familie.

And if he say thus, It is well, thy seruant shall haue peace: but if he be angrie, be sure that wickednesse is concluded of him.

So shalt thou shew mercy vnto thy seruant: for thou hast ioyned thy seruant into a couenant of the Lord with thee, and if there be in me iniquitie, slay thou me: for why shouldest thou bring me to thy father?

And Ionathan answered, God keepe that from thee: for if I knewe that wickednesse were concluded of my father to come vpon thee, would not I tell it thee?

Jonathan and David Renew Their Covenant

Then said Dauid to Ionathan, Who shall tell me? how shall I knowe, if thy father answere thee cruelly?

And Ionathan sayde to Dauid, Come and let vs goe out into the fielde: and they twaine went out into the fielde.

Then Ionathan sayde to Dauid, O Lord God of Israel, when I haue groped my fathers minde to morow at this time, or within this three dayes, and if it be well with Dauid, and I then send not vnto thee, and shewe it thee,

The Lord doe so and much more vnto Ionathan: but if my father haue minde to doe thee euill, I will shew thee also, and sende thee away, that thou mayest goe in peace: and the Lord be with thee as he hath bene with my father.

Likewise I require not whiles I liue: for I dout not but thou wilt shew me the mercy of the Lord, that I die not.

But I require that thou cut not off thy mercie from mine house for euer: no, not when the Lord hath destroyed the enemies of Dauid, euery one from the earth.

So Ionathan made a bond with the house of Dauid, saying, Let the Lord require it at the hands of Dauids enemies.

And againe Ionathan sware vnto Dauid, because he loued him (for he loued him as his owne soule)

Then said Ionathan to him, To morowe is the first day of the moneth: and thou shalt be looked for, for thy place shalbe emptie.

Therefore thou shalt hide thy selfe three dayes, then thou shalt goe downe quickely and come to the place where thou diddest hide thy selfe, when this matter was in hand, and shalt remayne by the stone Ezel.

And I will shoote three arrowes on the side thereof, as though I shot at a marke.

And after I wil sende a boy, saying, Goe, seeke the arrowes. If I say vnto the boy, See, the arrowes are on this side thee, bring them, and come thou: for it is well with thee and no hurt, as the Lord liueth.

But if I say thus vnto the boy, Behold, the arrowes are beyonde thee, goe thy way: for the Lord hath sent thee away.

As touching the thing which thou and I haue spoken of, beholde, the Lord be betweene thee and me for euer.

So Dauid hid him selfe in the field: and when the first day of the moneth came, the King sate to eate meate.

And the King sate, as at other times vpon his seate, euen vpon his seate by the wall: and Ionathan arose, and Abner sate by Sauls side, but Dauids place was emptie.

And Saul sayde nothing that day: for hee thought, Some thing hath befallen him, though he were cleane, or els becaus he was not purified.

But on the morowe which was the second day of the moneth, Dauids place was emptie againe: and Saul sayde vnto Ionathan his sonne, Wherefore commeth not the sonne of Ishai to meate, neither yesterday nor to day?

And Ionathan answered vnto Saul, Dauid required of me, that he might goe to Beth-lehem.

For he sayde, Let me goe, I pray thee: for our familie offreth a sacrifice in the citie, and my brother hath sent for me: therfore now if I haue found fauour in thine eyes, let me goe, I pray thee, and see my brethren: this is the cause that he commeth not vnto the Kings table.

Saul Seeks to Kill Jonathan

Then was Saul angrie with Ionathan, and sayde vnto him, Thou sonne of the wicked rebellious woman, doe not I know, that thou hast chosen the sonne of Ishai to thy confusion, and to the confusion and shame of thy mother?

For as long as the sonne of Ishai liueth vpon the earth, thou shalt not be stablished, nor thy kingdome: wherefore now send and fet him vnto me, for he shall surely die.

And Ionathan answered vnto Saul his father, and said vnto him, Wherefore shall he die? what hath he done?

And Saul cast a speare at him to hit him, whereby Ionathan knew, that it was determined of his father to slay Dauid.

So Ionathan arose from the table in a great anger, and did eate no meate the seconde day of the moneth: for he was sorie for Dauid, and because his father had reuiled him.

On the next morning therefore Ionathan than went out into the fielde, at the time appoynted with Dauid, and a litle boy with him.

And he saide vnto his boy, Runne now, seeke the arrowes which I shoote, and as the boy ran, he shot an arrowe beyond him.

And when the boy was come to the place where the arrowe was that Ionathan had shot, Ionathan cryed after the boy, and sayde, Is not the arrowe beyond thee?

And Ionathan cryed after the boy, Make speede, haste and stand not still: and Ionathans boy gathered vp the arrowes, and came to his master,

But the boy knewe nothing: onely Ionathan and Dauid knew the matter.

Then Ionathan gaue his bowe and arrowes vnto the boy that was with him, and sayd vnto him, Goe, carrie them into the citie.

Assoone as the boy was gone, Dauid arose out of a place that was towarde the South, and fel on his face to the ground, and bowed him selfe three times: and they kissed one another, and wept both twaine, till Dauid exceeded.

Therefore Ionathan said to Dauid, Goe in peace: that which we haue sworne both of vs in the Name of the Lord, saying, The Lord be betweene me and thee, and betweene my seede and betweene thy seede, let it stand for euer. And he arose and departed, and Ionathan went into the citie.

Jonatans Loyalität zu David

David aber floh aus Najoth, das in Ramatha ist, und kam zu Jonathas und sprach zu ihm: Was habe ich getan? Was ist mein Unrecht und was mein Vergehen wider deinen Vater, dass er mir nach dem Leben trachtet?

Er sprach zu ihm: Das sei fern! Du wirst nicht sterben; denn mein Vater wird nichts Großes oder Kleines tun, ohne es mir vorher zu offenbaren; dies allein also sollte mein Vater vor mir verborgen haben? Nein, dies kann nicht sein!

Und er schwor David abermals. Dieser aber sprach: Dein Vater weiß wohl, dass ich Gnade in deinen Augen gefunden habe, und wird sagen: Jonathas soll das nicht wissen, damit er sich nicht etwa betrübe. Wahrlich, so wahr der Herr lebt und du lebst, zwischen mir und dem Tode ist sozusagen nur ein Schritt!

Da sprach Jonathas zu David: Alles, was deine Seele mir sagt, tue ich für dich.

Und David sprach zu Jonathas: Siehe, morgen ist Neumond, wo ich, wie gewöhnlich, mit dem Könige zu Tische sitzen muss; entlaß mich denn, dass ich auf dem Felde verborgen bleibe bis zum Abend des dritten Tages.

Wenn dein Vater um sich schaut und nach mir fragt, so antworte ihm: David hat mich gebeten, eilends nach Bethlehem, seiner Stadt, gehen zu dürfen, weil dort festliche Opfer für alle seine Stammesgenossen stattfinden.

Sagt er dann: Es ist gut, so ist Friede für deinen Diener; wird er aber zornig, so wisse, dass er Böses beschlossen hat.

So übe nun Barmherzigkeit an deinem Diener, denn du ließest mich, deinen Diener, einen Bund des Herrn mit dir schließen. Habe ich aber ein Unrecht auf mir, so töte du mich und bringe mich nicht zu deinem Vater!

Da sprach Jonathas: Das sei fern von dir! Denn wenn ich sicher erfahre, dass mein Vater Böses wider dich beschlossen hat, kann ich es dir unmöglich vorenthalten.

David antwortete dem Jonathas: Wer wird mir Bescheid bringen, wenn etwa dein Vater dir eine harte Antwort betreffs meiner gibt?

Jonathas sprach zu David: Komm, lass uns auf das Feld hinausgehen! Da sie nun beide auf das Feld gegangen waren,

sprach Jonathas zu David: Herr, du Gott Israels! wenn ich meines Vaters Gesinnung erforsche, morgen oder übermorgen, und es etwas Gutes ist für David und ich nicht sogleich zu dir sende und es dir kundtue,

so tue der Herr dem Jonathas dies und das dazu an! Wenn mein Vater aber in seiner bösen Gesinnung gegen dich beharrt, so werde ich es dir offenbaren und dich in Frieden ziehen lassen; und der Herr möge mit dir sein, wie er mit meinem Vater gewesen ist.

Und wenn ich noch am Leben bin, so wirst du mir Barmherzigkeit des Herrn erweisen; bin ich aber gestorben,

so wirst du deine Barmherzigkeit meinem Hause in Ewigkeit nicht entziehen, wenn der Herr einen jeden der Feinde Davids aus dem Lande ausgetilgt hat. Der Herr raffe Jonathas aus seinem Hause weg und lasse es die Feinde Davids entgelten.

So schloß Jonathas einen Bund mit dem Hause Davids und der Herr ließ es wirklich die Feinde Davids entgelten.

Und Jonathas schwor David noch einmal, weil er ihn liebte; denn wie sein Leben, so liebte er ihn.

Und Jonathas sprach zu ihm: Morgen ist Neumond, da wird man nach dir fragen,

denn du wirst an deinem Platze bis übermorgen vermisst werden. Komme denn eilig herab und gehe an den Ort, wo du am Werktage verborgen sein musst, und setze dich bei dem Steine nieder, der Ezel heißt.

Ich aber werde drei Pfeile in seine Nähe hinschießen, als übte ich mich nach dem Ziele zu schießen,

und werde dann einen Knaben hinsenden, und zu ihm sagen: Gehe hin und hole mir die Pfeile!

Wenn ich dann dem Knaben sage: Siehe, die Pfeile liegen diesseits von dir, nimm sie, so komme zu mir, den es ist Friede für dich und es geschieht nichts Böses, so wahr der Herr lebt! Wenn ich aber zu dem Knaben sage: Siehe, die Pfeile liegen weiter von dir, so gehe in Frieden, denn der Herr lässt dich gehen.

Für das Versprechen aber, das wir uns gegenseitig gegeben haben, sei der Herr auf ewig Zeuge zwischen mir und dir.

Da verbarg sich David auf dem Lande, und als der Neumond kam, setzte der König sich zum Mahle.

Als nun der König (wie gewöhnlich) auf seinem Sitze saß, der an der Wand war, erhob sich Jonathas, und Abner setzte sich neben Saul, während der Sitz Davids leer war.

Saul aber sagte an jenem Tage nichts, denn er dachte, es sei ihm vielleicht begegnet, dass er nicht rein und noch nicht wieder rein geworden sei.

Als aber der zweite Tag nach dem Neumonde angebrochen war und der Platz Davids wieder leer blieb, sprach Saul zu seinem Sohne Jonathas: Warum ist der Sohn Isais weder gestern noch heute zum Mahle gekommen?

Da antwortete Jonathas dem Saul: Er hat mich inständig gebeten, nach Bethlehem gehen zu dürfen,

und gesprochen: Lass mich gehen, denn ein feierliches Opfer wird in der Stadt gehalten und einer von meinen Brüdern hat mich eingeladen; wenn ich also in deinen Augen Gnade gefunden habe, will ich schleunig hingehen und meine Brüder sehen. Aus diesem Grunde ist er nicht zur Tafel des Königs gekommen.

Da ward Saul über Jonathas zornig und sprach zu ihm: Du Sohn eines mannsüchtigen Weibes! Weiß ich etwa nicht, dass du den Sohn Isais liebst zur Schande für dich und zur Schande deiner ehrlosen Mutter?

Denn solange der Sohn Isais auf Erden am Leben bleibt, wirst du und deine Herrschaft nicht feststehen. Darum sende sogleich hin und lass ihn zu mir herholen, denn er ist ein Kind des Todes.

Jonathas aber antwortete seinem Vater Saul und sprach: Warum soll er sterben? Was hat er getan?

Da ergriff Saul seinen Speer, um ihn zu durchbohren. Und Jonathas erkannte, dass es bei seinem Vater beschlossen sei, David zu töten.

Darum stand Jonathas in höchster Aufregung vom Tische auf und aß am zweiten Tage des Neumondes nichts, denn er war um Davids willen betrübt, weil sein Vater ihm Schmach angetan hatte.

Als es nun Morgen geworden war, kam Jonathas auf das Feld hinaus, wie er es mit David verabredet hatte, und ein kleiner Knabe mit ihm.

Und er sprach zu seinem Knaben: Geh hin und hole mir die Pfeile, welche ich abschieße! Während nun der Knabe hinlief, schoß er einen andern Pfeil über den Knaben hinaus.

Als nun der Knabe zu der Stelle kam, wo der Pfeil lag, den Jonathas abgeschossen hatte, rief Jonathas hinter dem Knaben her und sprach: Siehe, dort ist der Pfeil, weit über dich hinaus!

Und abermals rief Jonathas hinter dem Knaben her und sprach: Hurtig, eile, stehe nicht stille! Da las der Knabe des Jonathas die Pfeile auf und brachte sie zu seinem Herrn,

er wusste aber ganz und gar nicht, worum es sich handelte, denn nur Jonathas und David wussten um die Sache.

Dann gab Jonathas dem Knaben seine Waffen und sprach zu ihm: Gehe und bringe sie in die Stadt!

Als nun der Knabe weggegangen war, erhob sich David von dem Orte, der nach Mittag lag, fiel auf sein Angesicht zur Erde nieder und verneigte sich dreimal; dann küssten sie sich einander und weinten zusammen, David aber am meisten.

Da sprach Jonathas zu David: Gehe hin in Frieden! Was wir uns beide im Namen des Herrn geschworen haben, indem wir sprachen: Zeuge sei der Herr zwischen mir und dir und zwischen meinen Nachkommen und deinen Nachkommen in Ewigkeit.

Und David machte sich auf und ging von dannen, Jonathas aber begab sich in die Stadt.
