Nehemiah is sent to Judah

Now it happened that, in the month of Nisan, in the twentieth year of king Artaxerxes, wine was before him; and I lifted up the wine, and I gave it to the king. And I was like someone languishing before his face.

And the king said to me: “Why is your expression sad, though you do not appear to be sick? This is not without cause, but some evil, I know not what, is in your heart.” And I was struck with an exceedingly great fear.(a)

And I said to the king: “O king, live forever. Why should my expression not be mournful, since the city of the house of the sepulchers of my father is desolate, and its gates have been burned with fire?”

And the king said to me: “What would you request?” And I prayed to the God of heaven.

And I said to the king: “If it seems good to the king, and if your servant is pleasing before your face: that you would send me into Judea, to the city of the sepulcher of my father. And I will rebuild it.”

And the king said to me, with the queen who was sitting beside him: “Until what time will your journey be, and when will you return?” And it was pleasing before the countenance of the king, and so he sent me. And I established a time for him.

And I said to the king: “If it seems good to the king, may he give me letters to the governors of the region beyond the river, so that they may lead me through, until I arrive in Judea,

and a letter to Asaph, the keeper of the king’s forest, so that he may give me timber, in order that I may be able to cover the gates of the tower of the house, and the walls of the city, and the house that I will enter.” And the king granted to me in accord with the good hand of my God, who is with me.

And I went to the governors of the region beyond the river, and I gave them the letters of the king. Now the king had sent with me military leaders and horsemen.

And Sanballat, a Horonite, and the servant Tobiah, an Ammonite, heard this. And they were saddened, with a great affliction, that a man had arrived who was seeking the prosperity of the sons of Israel.

Nehemiah visits the wall of Jerusalem

And I arrived at Jerusalem, and I was there for three days.

And I got up in the night, I and a few men with me. And I did not reveal to anyone what God had placed in my heart to do in Jerusalem. And there was no animal with me, except the animal on which I was sitting.

And I departed in the night through the gate of the valley, and before the fountain of the dragon, and toward the dung gate. And I considered the wall of Jerusalem, which was broken apart, and its gates, which had been consumed by fire.

And I continued on to the gate of the fountain, and to the aqueduct of the king. And there was no room for the beast on which I was sitting to pass through.

And so I climbed up in the night along the torrent, and I considered the wall. And turning back, I went by the gate of the valley, and I returned.

Now the magistrates did not know where I had gone, or what I had done. For I had revealed nothing, even to that point in time, to the Jews, or to the priests, or to the nobles, or to the magistrates, or to the others who were doing the work.

And so I said to them: “You know the affliction in which we are, because Jerusalem is desolate, and its gates have been consumed by fire. Come, and let us rebuild the walls of Jerusalem, and let us no longer be in disgrace.”

And I revealed to them how the hand of my God was with me for good, and the words of the king, which he had spoken to me. And I said: “Let us rise up, and build.” And their hands were strengthened for good.

But Sanballat, a Horonite, and the servant Tobiah, an Ammonite, and Geshem, an Arab, heard of it. And they ridiculed and disparaged us, and they said: “What is this thing that you are doing? Could you be rebelling against the king?”

And I replied to them a word, and I said to them: “The God of heaven himself is helping us, and we are his servants. Let us rise up and build. But there is no portion, or justice, or remembrance in Jerusalem for you.”

Nehemia wird nach Juda gesandt

Es begab sich aber im Monat Nisan, in zwanzigsten Jahre des König Artaxerxes, dass Wein vor ihm stand; und ich nahm den Wein und reichte ihn dem Könige, ich war aber beinahe ohnmächtig vor seinem Angesichte.

Da sprach der König zu mir: Warum ist dein Angesicht traurig, während ich doch nicht sehe, dass du krank bist? Ohne Ursache ist dies nicht, sondern irgend ein Kummer ist in deinem Herzen. Da geriet ich in großen Schrecken

und sprach zu dem Könige: O König, mögest du immerdar leben! Wie sollte mein Angesicht nicht trauern, da die Stadt, wo das Grab meines Vaters ist verwüstet liegt und ihre Tore vom Feuer verzehrt sind?

Der König sprach zu mir: Was begehrst du? Da betete ich zu dem Gott des Himmels

und sprach sodann zu dem Könige: Wenn es dem Könige gut scheint und dein Diener vor deinem Angesichte Wohlgefallen findet, so mögest du mich nach Judäa, in die Stadt, wo das Grab meines Vaters ist, senden, dass ich sie aufbaue.

Da sprach der König und die Königin, die ihm zur Seite saß, zu mir: Bis wie lange wird deine Reise dauern und wann wirst du zurückkehren? Es war also dem Könige wohlgefällig, mich zu senden, und ich gab ihm eine Zeit an.

Und ich sprach zu dem Könige: Wenn es dem Könige gut scheint, so möge er mir Briefe an die Statthalter des Landes jenseits des Stromes geben, dass sie mich hinübergeleiten, bis ich nach Judäa komme,

und einen Brief an Asaph, den Aufseher des königlichen Waldes, dass er mir Holz gebe, um die Tore am Turme des Hauses und die Mauern der Stadt decken zu können, und für das Haus, in das ich ziehen werde. Und der König bewilligte es mir, da die Hand meines Gottes gnädig über mir waltete.

So kam ich zu den Statthaltern des Landes jenseits des Stromes und gab ihnen die Schreiben des Königs. Der König hatte aber Befehlshaber des Heeres und Reiter mit mir geschickt.

Als dies Sanaballat, der Horoniter, und Tobias, der Knecht, der Ammaniter, hörten, war es ihnen ein großer Verdruss, dass ein Mann kam, das Wohl der Söhne Israels zu suchen.

Nehemia besichtigt die Mauer von Jerusalem

Als ich nach Jerusalem gekommen war und daselbst drei Tage weilte,

machte ich mich bei Nacht mit wenigen Männern auf, ohne jemand zu sagen, was Gott mir in das Herz gegeben hatte, in Jerusalem zu tun; auch war kein Tier bei mir als das Tier, auf dem ich saß.

Und ich zog des Nachts durch das Taltor hinaus, bei der Drachenquelle vorbei bis zum Misttore und betrachtete die zerstörte Mauer Jerusalems und ihre vom Feuer verzehrten Tore.

Hierauf zog ich weiter zum Quelltore und zur Wasserleitung des Königs; dort war für das Tier, auf dem ich saß, kein Raum, um durchzukommen.

So zog ich denn nachts das Tal hinauf und betrachtete die Mauer und kehrte wieder um und kam zum Taltore und nach Hause zurück.

Die Vorsteher aber wussten nicht, wohin ich gegangen war, oder was ich tun wollte, denn auch den Juden und Priestern und Vornehmen und Vorstehern und den übrigen, welche am Baue tätig waren, hatte ich bis dahin nichts mitgeteilt.

Da sprach ich zu ihnen: Ihr kennt das Elend, in dem wir uns befinden; denn Jerusalem liegt sich verwüstet und seine Tore sind vom Feuer verzehrt; kommet und lasset uns die Mauern Jerusalems aufbauen, dass wir nicht länger ein Gegenstand der Verhöhnung seien!

Alsdann zeigte ich ihnen an, wie gütig die Hand meines Gottes über mir gewaltet, und die Worte des Königs, die er zu mir gesprochen, und sagte: Wir wollen uns aufmachen und bauen! So wurden ihre Hände zum Guten gestärkt.

Als aber Sanaballat, der Horoniter, und Tobias, der Knecht, der Ammaniter, und Gosem, der Araber, es hörten, spotteten sie unser und verachteten uns und sprachen: Was ist das, was ihr da tut? Wollt ihr euch gegen den König empören?

Da gab ich ihnen zur Antwort und sprach zu ihnen: Der Gott des Himmels hilft uns und wir sind seine Diener; wir wollen uns aufmachen und bauen, ihr aber habt keinen Anteil noch Anrecht noch Andenken in Jerusalem.
