- Kapitel 16 -

Then the word of the Lord came to Jehu, the son of Hanani, against Baasha, saying:

“Even though I exalted you from the dust, and I set you as ruler over my people Israel, still you have walked in the way of Jeroboam, and you have caused my people Israel to sin, so that you have provoked me by their sins.

Behold, I will cut down the posterity of Baasha, and the posterity of his house. And I will make your house like the house of Jeroboam, the son of Nebat.

Whoever will have died of Baasha in the city, the dogs will consume him. And whoever will have died of him in the countryside, the birds of the air will consume him.”

Now the rest of the words of Baasha, and whatever he did, and his battles, were these not written in the book of the words of the days of the kings of Israel?

Then Baasha slept with his fathers, and he was buried at Tirzah. And Elah, his son, reigned in his place.

And when the word of the Lord had arrived by the hand of the prophet Jehu, the son of Hanani, against Baasha, and against his house, and against every evil that he had done before the Lord, so that he provoked him by the works of his hands, so that he became like the house of Jeroboam: for this reason, he killed him, that is, the prophet Jehu, the son of Hanani.

Elah Reigns in Israel

In the twenty-sixth year of Asa, the king of Judah, Elah, the son of Baasha, reigned over Israel, at Tirzah, for two years.

And his servant Zimri, the commander of one half part of the horsemen, rebelled against him. Now Elah was drinking at Tirzah, and he became inebriated in the house of Arza, the prefect of Tirzah.

Then Zimri, rushing in, struck him and killed him, in the twenty-seventh year of Asa, the king of Judah. And he reigned in his place.

And when he had reigned and had sat upon his throne, he struck down the entire house of Baasha. And he did not leave behind of them anything that urinates against a wall, among both close relatives and his friends.

And so, Zimri destroyed the entire house of Baasha, in accord with the word of the Lord, which he had spoken to Baasha, by the hand the prophet of Jehu,

because of all the sins of Baasha, and the sins of Elah, his son, who sinned and caused Israel to sin, provoking the Lord, the God of Israel, with their vanities.

But the rest of the words of Elah, and all that he did, were these not written in the book of the words of the days of the kings of Israel?

Zimri Reigns in Israel

In the twenty-seventh year of Asa, the king of Judah, Zimri reigned for seven days in Tirzah. For the army was besieging Gibbethon, a city of the Philistines.

And when they had heard that Zimri had rebelled, and that he had killed the king, all of Israel made Omri as a king for themselves; he was the leader of the military over Israel in the encampment in that day.

Therefore, Omri ascended, and all of Israel with him, from Gibbethon, and they besieged Tirzah.

Then Zimri, seeing that the city was about to be taken, entered the palace, and he set fire to himself along with the royal house. And he died

in his sins, which he had sinned, doing evil before the Lord, and walking in the way of Jeroboam, and in his sin, by which he caused Israel to sin.

But the rest of the words of Zimri, and of his treachery and tyranny, were these not written in the book of the words of the days of the kings of Israel?

Omri Reigns in Israel

Then the people of Israel were divided into two parts: one half part of the people followed Tibni, the son of Ginath, having appointed him as king, and one half part followed Omri.

But the people who were with Omri prevailed over the people who were following Tibni, the son of Ginath. And Tibni died, and Omri reigned.

In the thirty-first year of Asa, the king of Judah, Omri reigned over Israel for twelve years; he reigned for six years at Tirzah.(a)

And he bought the mount of Samaria from Shemer for two talents of silver. And he built upon it, and he called the name of the city that he had built, Samaria, after the name of Shemer, the owner of the mount.(b)

But Omri did evil in the sight of the Lord, and he wrought wickedness, beyond all who had been before him.

And he walked in all the ways of Jeroboam, the son of Nebat, and in his sins, by which he had caused Israel to sin, so that he provoked the Lord, the God of Israel, by their vanities.(c)

Now the rest of the words of Omri, and his battles that he carried out, were these not written in the book of the words of the days of the kings of Israel?

And Omri slept with his fathers, and he was buried in Samaria. And Ahab, his son, reigned in his place.

Ahab Reigns in Israel, Marries Jezebel

Truly, Ahab, the son of Omri, reigned over Israel in the thirty-eighth year of Asa, the king of Judah. And Ahab, the son of Omri, reigned over Israel at Samaria for twenty-two years.

And Ahab, the son of Omri, did evil in the sight of the Lord, beyond all who had been before him.

And it was not enough for him to walk in the sins of Jeroboam, the son of Nebat. In addition, he took as a wife Jezebel, the daughter of Eth-baal, the king of the Sidonians. And he went astray, and he served Baal, and adored him.

And he set up an altar for Baal, in the temple of Baal, which he had built at Samaria.

And he planted a sacred grove. And Ahab added to his works, provoking the Lord, the God of Israel, beyond all the kings of Israel who had been before him.

In his days, Hiel from Bethel built up Jericho. With Abiram, his firstborn, he founded it, and with Segub, his youngest son, he set up its gates, in accord with the word of the Lord, which he had spoken by the hand of Joshua, the son of Nun.

Es erging aber das Wort des Herrn an Jehu, den Sohn Hananis, wider Baasa, also:

Dafür dass ich dich aus dem Staube erhoben und dich zum Fürsten über mein Volk Israel gesetzt habe, du aber auf dem Wege Jeroboams gewandelt bist und mein Volk Israel zur Sünde verführt hast, so dass du mich durch ihre Sünden zum Zorne reiztest,

siehe, werde ich die Nachkommen Baasas und die Nachkommen seines Hauses abmähen und deinem Hause tun, wie dem Hause Jeroboams, dem Sohne Nabats.

Wer von Baasa in der Stadt stirbt, den sollen die Hunde fressen, und wer von ihm auf dem Felde stirbt, den sollen die Vögel des Himmels verzehren.

Was aber sonst von Baasa zu sagen ist und was er getan und seine Kriege, ist das nicht in den Jahrbüchern der Könige von Israel beschrieben?

Baasa also entschlief zu seinen Vätern und ward in Thersa begraben, sein Sohn Ela ward König an seiner Statt.

Als aber durch Jehu, den Sohn Hananis, den Propheten, wider Baasa und wider sein Haus und wider alles Böse, das er vor dem Herrn getan, da er ihn durch die Werke seiner Hände reizte, das Wort erging, es werde ihm ergehen wie dem Hause Jeroboams, so tötete dieser ihn deshalb, das ist Jehu, den Sohn Hananis, den Propheten.

Elah regiert in Israel

Im sechsundzwanzigsten Jahre Asas, des Königs von Juda, ward Ela, der Sohn Baasas, in Thersa König von Israel, zwei Jahre.

Sein Diener Zambri aber, der Oberste über die eine Hälfte der Reiter, empörte sich gegen ihn; Ela zechte gerade in Thersa und ward trunken im Hause Arsas, des Vorstehers von Thersa.

Da überfiel ihn Zambri und schlug ihn und tötete ihn im siebenundzwanzigsten Jahre Asas, des Königs von Juda, und ward König an seiner Statt.

Als er nun König geworden war und auf dem Throne Baasas saß, erschlug er dessen ganzes Haus und ließ davon keinen übrig, der die Wand näßt, weder seine Verwandten noch Freunde.

So vertilgte Zambri das ganze Haus Baasas, dem Worte des Herrn gemäß, das er zu Baasa durch den Propheten Jehu gesprochen,

wegen aller Sünden Baasas und der Sünden seines Sohnes Ela, welche sie begangen und zu denen sie Israel verführt hatten, indem sie den Herrn, den Gott Israels, durch ihre nichtigen Götzen zum Zorne reizten.

Was aber sonst von Ela zu sagen ist und alles, was er getan, ist das nicht in den Jahrbüchern der Könige von Israel beschrieben?

Simri regiert in Israel

Im siebenundzwanzigsten Jahre Asas, des Königs von Juda, ward Zambri König, sieben Tage in Thersa; das Kriegsheer aber belagerte Gebbethon, eine Stadt der Philister.

Als es nun hörte, dass Zambri sich empört und den König ermordet habe, machte ganz Israel an demselben Tage im Lager Amri über sich zum Könige, welcher als der Oberste des Heeres über Israel gebot.

Amri zog alsbald mit ganz Israel von Gebbethon hin und sie belagerten Thersa.

Als nun Zambri sah, dass die Stadt eingenommen werde, begab er sich in den Palast und verbrannte sich selbst mit dem Königshause und starb

in seinen Sünden, die er begangen, da er tat, was vor dem Herrn böse war, und auf dem Wege Jeroboams und in dessen Sünde wandelte, durch die er Israel zur Sünde verführt hatte.

Was aber sonst von Zambri zu sagen ist und seiner Verschwörung und Gewaltherrschaft, ist das nicht in den Jahrbüchern der Könige von Israel beschrieben?

Omri regiert in Israel

Hierauf spaltete sich das Volk Israel in zwei Teile: die eine Hälfte des Volkes trat auf Seite Thebnis, des Sohnes Gineths, um ihn zum Könige zu machen, die andere hing Amri an.

Das Volk aber, welches auf der Seite Amris stand, siegte über das Volk, welches Thebni, dem Sohne Gineths, anhing; und Thebni starb und Amri ward König.

Im einunddreißigsten Jahre Asas, des Königs von Juda, ward Amri König über Israel, zwölf Jahre; in Thersa herrschte er sechs Jahre.

Er kaufte den Berg Samaria von Somer und zwei Talente Silbers und erbaute ihn und nannte den Namen der Stadt, die er erbaut hatte, nach dem Namen Semers, des Herrn des Berges, Samaria.

Amri aber tat, was in den Augen des Herrn böse war, und machte es ärger als alle, die vor ihm gewesen waren.

Und er wandelte ganz auf dem Wege Jeroboams, des Sohnes Nabats, und in dessen Sünden, durch die er Israel zur Sünde verführt hatte, dass er den Herrn, den Gott Israels, durch seine nichtigen Götzen zum Zorne reizte.

Was aber sonst von Amri zu sagen ist und seine Kriege, die er geführt, ist das nicht in den Jahrbüchern der Könige von Israel beschrieben?

Und Amri entschlief zu seinen Vätern und ward in Samaria begraben; sein Sohn Achab ward König an seiner Statt.

Ahab regiert in Israel

Achab aber, der Sohn Amris, ward König über Israel im achtunddreißigsten Jahre Asas, des Königs von Asa, des Königs von Juda. Und Achab, der Sohn Amris, herrschte über Israel in Samaria zweiundzwanzig Jahre.

Achab, der Sohn Amris, tat, was in den Augen des Herrn böse war, mehr noch als alle, die vor ihm gewesen waren.

Ja, es war ihm nicht genug in den Sünden Jeroboams, des Sohnes Nabats, zu wandeln, überdies nahm er auch Jezabel, die Tochter Ethbaals, des Königs der Sidonier, zum Weibe. Und er ging hin und diente dem Baal und betete ihn an.

Auch errichtete er dem Baal einen Altar im Tempel des Baal, den er in Samaria erbaut hatte,

und pflanzte einen Hain; und Achab verübte noch mehr, den Herrn, den Gott Israels, zum Zorne reizend, mehr als alle Könige Israels, die ihm vorangegangen waren.

Zu seiner Zeit baute Hiel von Bethel Jericho; um Abiram, seinen Erstgebornen, legte er ihren Grund und um den Preis Segubs, seines Jüngsten, setzte er ihre Tore ein, dem Wort des Herrn gemäß, das er durch Josue, den Sohn Nuns, gesprochen hatte.
